What Is An Operating System And Types Of Operating Systems

 What is an Operating System

  • Hardware + Software = Computer System
  • Application Software + System Software = Software

  • An operating system is a system software that acts as bridge between the user and his/ her device. Without the Operating System a user wouldn't be able to interact with the computer.
  • Operating systems are responsible for everything from the control and allocation of memory to recognizing input external devices and transmitting output to computer displays. They also manage files on computer hard drives and control peripherals, like printers and scanners.

List of Operating Systems

There are a variety of operating systems out there so here are the more common ones:

  • Windows
  • Linux
  • Android
  • IOS
  • macOS
List of Operating Systems continue...

Windows:

known for its user-friendly interface and wide range of software, Windows is a well-known operating system that is used globally on most personal computers. It was created and owned by a company called Microsoft in the USA, founded by Bill H. Gates in the mid 1980s. There are many versions' Windows e.g.  Windows 1.0, Windows 95, Windows XP, Windows 10 etc. that came out over the years each with their own differences and better than the other.

Linux:

Linux is an open-source operating system that is very popular amongst developers and for servers due to its flexibility and security was created by a Finnish computer engineer named Linus B. Torvalds and the Free Software Foundation (FSF) in the early 1990s; with that said, the Linux operating system is not specifically owned by anyone and is available to the public to do with as they wish, hence "open-source." Unlike Windows, Linux doesn't have versions but "distributions" "or distros", think of them like different flavors of Linux e.g. Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, etc.

Android:

It's an open-source operating system created by the company Google in the late 2000s, the operating system can be mostly found on smartphones and tablets, its known for being customizable and having a large app store. How Google made this OS, they took the Linux kernel and built Android on top of it, basically creating an operating system that's for mobile devices. Google released versions of Android from 2008 to 2017, each named after sweet treats like Cupcake, Jelly Bean, and Oreo. This fun naming tradition became a signature of Android, with each version bringing new features and improvements. However, after Android Oreo in 2017, Google decided to stop using dessert names and switched to simpler version numbers instead.

IOS and MacOS:

Both made by the company Apple, founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Worzniak, iOS and macOS are designed to work perfectly with Apple devices. iOS created in 2007, is the OS that runs on the mobile devises iPhones and iPads, known for being simple to use and very secure. macOS created in 1984 is the OS that you find on Mac computers, with a clean design and lots of powerful tools. Both systems get regular updates to keep them fresh and safe.
